Gravity Doesn’t Exist at the Mystery Spot
It’s a serious statement. Is it true? Yes and no. But your brain definitely gets confused. Gravity, one of the fundamental laws of physics, is certainly tested at the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz.
The roadside attraction along the California Coast is a controversial place. Various theories have sprung up about its origin and unorthodox features. Some link the puzzling site to airships buried underground, which leads to the complete usefulness of all navigating devices.
Others suggest that the curious effect at the Mystery Spot is created by radioactive material under the ground or, as a few insist, is the result of the thinning of the ozone layer.
Scientists give the most rational explanation. The peculiar phenomena you experience at the Mystery Spot are entirely the results of optical illusions created by tilted frames and intentional misdirection. Neither gravity nor the other fundamental laws of physics fail here.
Now that I did some digging into the background and conflicting sensations one may experience at the Mystery Spot (I didn’t feel disoriented or lightheaded like many in our group did), I can’t not agree with the optical illusion explanation. At least partially. The theory doesn’t give any explanation to the mysterious leans of 3, 11, and 17 degrees inside the Mystery Spot and a tilted cabin.
But let’s go back to the time when we toured the controversial place.
The Mystery Spot Tour
I didn’t know anything about the Mystery Spot prior to our trip to Santa Cruz and Fremont, Northern California. It was Roshan’s idea – a surprise for Dylan and his friend – that he shared with me the night before.
I googled the place. My first reaction…
The pictures of people standing on the ground but tilting at various angles without an apparent aid to support their weights could be altered. Photoshop and now AI can do excellent jobs at creating this kind of illusion.
The truth is I didn’t even care if the Mystery Spot was a genius marketing strategy to attract visitors or an unexplainable phenomenon like its website claimed.
Is It Worth It: The place promised an unforgettable fun activity for the entire family. And it did deliver it.
According to the Mystery Spot website, only guided tours were allowed inside the mysterious cabin up on the hill. A session lasted 45 minutes. Short and sweet, an activity we could commit to.
Visiting the Mysterious House on the Hill
What we didn’t realize was how busy the place could be, especially on weekends. We arrived in the morning alright, but failed to reserve our spots in advance. All tickets were sold out for the next tour, and the tour after that, and a few tours that followed.
The next excursion with a few spots available wasn’t until 3:00 pm. Way too late as we had more than a 5-hour drive back to LA with a stop at OstrichLand in Solvang planned out for the rest of the day.
Yet it looked like mysterious events happened both inside and outside of the tilted house on the hill. Somehow we managed to claim a few openings for one of the morning tours.
TIP: The bottom line, purchase your tickets online and in advance to ensure successful admission and the time that works best for you.
Things to Know before Visiting the Tilted House
- Hours: The Mystery Spot is open 365 days a year, normally from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. The time varies slightly on Saturdays and Sundays.
- Visiting on Weekends: On busy weekends and holidays, the Mystery Spot may close the road in early afternoon. If this happens, only visitors with reservations are allowed to enter. You can still purchase a ticket online or over the phone, but expect longer wait time, an hour or longer.
- Running Late: Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your reserve time slot or you risk missing your tour. If you are running late, give them a call and reschedule your tour for a later time, given that the spots are still available.
- Parking: Parking is limited, but can still accommodate visitors with reservations. You pay for the parking upon arrival.

Mystery Spot Hiking Trail: Bud and Emma’s Trail
If you arrive early or, as in our case, have some time to spare before your tour, head to the right of the parking lot and hike a short Mystery Spot Trail. The path is unpaved, but well maintained. It spans approximately 0.6 mile and takes roughly 30 minutes to walk along.
The trail runs through the redwood forest and is considered moderate as it climbs a few short, steep slopes.
