Upcountry Maui sits permanently off the radar of the majority of the island’s visitors. And so is one of its gorgeous hidden gems, the color-infused Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm.

In Search of Maui’s Hidden Gems
For a more or less advertised place – if you read through all the promotional fliers rental car companies generously provide you with – the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm still feels like an untrodden section of Maui.
The place may get busy as the day progresses. But arrive to the flower-infused fields early in the morning (we reached the entrance gate with the time to spare and admire the views), and you’ll have not only Ali’i Kula Lavender, but the entire hills in front of it to enjoy without any obstructions, cars and all.
Visitors will start arriving soon. Yet even at its moderate 13.5 acres, the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm never feels overcrowded. Guests come and go, leaving the flower fields with its cozy gift and coffee shop to retain its tranquility and the air of seclusion.
Location
We made our way to the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm on the last morning of our Maui trip. Starting our last adventure in Kihei and navigating a good section of the same road (the Kula Highway, otherwise known as Hawaii Route 37) that takes you along the rural slopes of the Haleakala volcano and eventually merges with the infamous Backroad to Hana, we enjoyed the now familiar views in the reverse order.
Ideally, we should’ve stopped at Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm two days ago, while heading back to the southwestern coast of Maui after spending a day at the Hana Coast. But, boy, you can’t possibly see and explore the winding Road to Hana in several hours and expect to make it to the lavender farm during its operating hours.
We had to make a separate trip to the secluded Ali’i Kula Farm, tucked away on the scenic slopes of Haleakala.
Hours of Operation
At the time of our trip to Maui, Ali’i Kula Lavender welcomed visitors only four days a week, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, from 10 am to 4 pm. So, if you’re planning to squeeze this hidden gem into your Maui itinerary, check out the farm’s hours of operation beforehand.

Visiting Ali’i Kula Lavender
Upon arrival to the sweeping hills of the upcountry region of Maui, we savored the complete solitude (except for crickets and other island creatures) for a while. At 10 in the morning, when two more groups (two and three people in each) joined us at an outside parking area of the Ali’i Kula Lavender, the farm’s gate swung open.
We paid our entrance fees (at that time, $5 per adult, child and senior admission fees were lower), had a quick orientation session, and were off to explore this beautiful hidden paradise of Maui on our own.
Different varieties of lavender shrubs are grown on the property, up to 15 of them. And although lavender is primarily a summer bloomer, Maui’s flower farm cultivates approximately 9 varieties that bloom all year round.
Lavender, however, is only one of the plant species you can enjoy at Ali’i Kula. From olive trees, succulents, hydrangea, and a wide range of other plants, the property is bedecked with flowers and trees of different colors and shapes. Their sweet aromas ooze around, steering you in the direction of their sources.

The Flower Farm with a View
Many plants are propagated right here at the property. As you stroll along a garden path aligned with flowers and trees, a wooden structure appears to your left. Serving both as a plant nursery and an overlook from where you can admire the expansive vista all the way to the ocean, it adds that special rustic charm that you expect to experience at a flower farm but still feel extra blessed to find.
The sweeping panorama was the selling point for me. Since we visited Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm in early March, the lavender fields weren’t at their peak bloom. But the views from the farm perched at an elevation of roughly 4,000 feet encompassed rolling farmlands below and stretched all the way to the West Maui Mountains and southern coastline. These you can enjoy all year round.
