Red Sand Beach is one of the most picturesque secluded coves on Maui. It’s a fact. But the real question is whether you should visit or skip this dramatic coastline.

Visiting the Secluded Red Sand Beach
I’ve heard about Red Rock Beach or, as locals call it, Kaihalulu Beach on Maui for years. Not being desperate or particularly crazy about the place, I let nature, weather, and time decide if this adventure was worth it. It took me two trips to Maui to finally see the hidden cove with dramatic dark red sand in person.
Even this time, opening only a short rainless window, nature seemed to remind us to be quick and respectful. Access to the beach is first and foremost the right and privilege of locals.
Location
The vibrant Red Sand Beach is tucked away at the base of the eroding cliffs in Hana. The trail leading to this dramatic coastline runs through a private property. According to Hawaii law, access to public shorelines cannot be denied. Yet, walking across private land is nothing else but trespassing.
The Trail

Hiking to Red Sand Beach
Despite the heavy rains that are norms rather than exceptions along the Hana Coast, the trail to the beach was dry already. The red and brownish loose gravel under our feet wasn’t slippery now. But we could see that during and after heavier rains, it could be dangerous to walk along the unmaintained trail that ran right along the cliff edge. In some sections, way too close to the brink.
The Red Sand Beach Trail itself is never a straightforward climb uphill or a rapid descent to the shore. It’s a rollercoaster of a path, with a new incline starting as soon as you get to the bottom of a small, but noticeable to your legs slope.
In this undulated fashion, the trail makes several turns before reaching the edge of the cliff from where you can see the secluded cove with the dramatic deep-red sand.
Now you can beeline to the beach and deep your feet in the cool water (it was much colder compared to the warm water at Black Sand Beach in early March).
If you hike the treacherous Red Sand Beach Trail for the panoramic views, carefully perch on an exposed massive tree root above the cove and enjoy the scenery and serenity. Humpback whales are often seen from here, breaching and playing out in the ocean during their winter stay. In Hawaii, this time is normally December to mid-April.

Who Can Hike to Red Sand Beach
We all made it to the crescent-shaped Red Sand Beach without any issues. A few older women, carrying boxes of food and obviously anticipating a nice outing by the ocean, turned back as soon as they crossed the flat and open section of the trail near the trailhead and got closer to the ocean side.
Here tamed by the cliff wall from one side and the open ocean from the other, the rollercoaster-like Red Sand Beach Trail presented itself in full view. Some people turned back halfway through the hike, before the trail, now even narrower, hugged the cliff.
Overall, the trail is doable for an average person. My mom, who has been terrified of heights all her life, but has learned to control her phobia to a certain extent over the past few years, managed to hike the entire distance from the trailhead to Red Sand Beach without hardly any assistance.
A slightly different situation was with Dylan. But does any 8-year old adhere to all the rules? Still with some restraint to suppress his energy and speed, helping here and there, and hand holding, we succeeded at hiking the entire trail at a steady and, most importantly, safe pace. Getting the boy out of the water was an entirely different story.
Is Red Sand Beach Worth Going to?
Red Sand Beach is a hidden gem in the town of Hana along the infamous Hana Coast. The place is mostly popular with locals and remains relatively crowd-free. Again thanks to its not so straightforward location.
Some articles I came across lately talk about over tourism and the misuse of places for the sake of boasting about them on social media. In the case of Red Sand Beach, I’d like to maintain a little bit of neutrality.
Yes, Red Sand Beach is spectacular! It’s the kind of place I prefer to visit. If after reading this and seeing our pictures, you decide that the secluded cove is indeed a place that speaks to your heart, let the adventure begin. The trailhead is quite easy to find once you make it to the town. Use your phone GPS or ask locals and enjoy the hike to the hidden and mysterious cove.
The Red Sand Beach Trail, however, is not appropriate for all health and activity levels. Furthermore, the area is isolated. If you prefer lazing on a beach with easy access to some modern conveniences and lots of opportunities to meet new beach buddies, you may want to check out other oceanfront places on Maui.

Why Is the Sand Red?
The place gets its signature color from iron-rich volcanic rocks. Over time, the rocks oxidize in the air and water and literally “rust”, acquiring their deep-red shade.
