Is LEGOLAND California Worth Visiting? (Our Honest Review)

Per Dylan’s insistence, we went to LEGOLAND California to find it predictable, crowded, somewhat overrated, suitable for a specific group age (the smaller the kid the more exciting the place is), and pleasantly surprising.

Is LEGOLAND California worth visiting?

Close to Home Travel

Our closer to home travel chapter got merrier, more inspiring. We definitely learned and saw something new even in the least expected places such as LEGOLAND California.

Is it just me or do popular places like LEGOLAND, Disneyland, and even Universal Studios tire you more than a day of hiking in the mountains? I certainly didn’t feel as exhausted after a more than a 10-mile uphill hike in Many Glacier a few years ago with the smaller Dylan who, on top of everything, needed to be carried often as after our a few-hour trip to LEGOLAND.

Yet as a parent, sometimes you put your reasons and common sense behind and listen to the wishes of the youngsters.

Dylan has been into lego lately. Who doesn’t at this age? Before our trip, LEGOLAND was THAT place for him. A place where magic unfolded, and the favorite characters of Ninjago came to life.

Location: To surprise him, Roshan planned a trip to Carlsbad, home to the famous LEGOLAND California and Carlsbad’s Flower Fields. The drive from Los Angeles is approximately 1.5 hours. With the LA traffic, it can take that long just to get to the ocean from the San Fernando Valley. So, the trip to Carlsbad felt like an easy, one-day family getaway.

LEGOLAND Visit: An Honest Review

LEGOLAND California is crowded, bustling, exciting, and quite unexpected. The LEGOLAND grounds are jam-packed with small and big statues made of tiny lego puzzles. Arranged together, they create the world that every child dreams of.

The park is separated in sections, based on the themes, moods, and characters that inspired their creation. Small lego playgrounds where both kids and parents can take a short break show up in between.

Similar to every place of such grandeur, LEGOLAND has it all: exciting attractions, rides, meeting with a ninja, long lines, boat rides, and a dance-off party. In other words, everything a small kid expects (except for long lines, of course).

LEGOLAND California is also adept at replicating some of the most iconic sites such as the Statue of Liberty, adhering to their shapes and colors as much as the lego bricks allow.

SEA LIFE Aquarium at LEGOLAND California

But there was one place that sparked our enthusiasm and made LEGOLAND look unexpectedly enticing. The SEA LIFE Aquarium at LEGOLAND California!

Was it my favorite place in the entire theme park? You bet. As we grow older, our priorities change. We can’t say no to places that we are not particularly interested in as an innate sense of duty and desire to create a memorable childhood for our kids keeps us accountable. If at one point we need to endure a place or experience with a smile and genuine excitement (as much as we can muster, otherwise it feels fake), then let it be.

Yet when we come across sites like the SEA LIFE Aquarium, it makes the whole experience ten times better.

Let’s be honest, the Aquarium at LEGOLAND isn’t the largest or the most sea-creatures abundant marine park in Southern California. Designed as a child’s first interactive guide to the rich underwater kingdom, it’s home to more than 350 different species. More than 5,000 marine creatures, from sharks to sting rays, jellyfish, and seahorses, swim in the glass tanks.

Different World at the Theme Park

What makes the SEA LIFE Aquarium worth visiting is its location.

Dylan was reluctant at first, nagging to return to the lego-made world. But within a few minutes, the fishy realm intrigued him as much as it did us. We had so much joy watching seahorses showing off their golden colors; sharks swimming in the pools like kings, unstoppable and untouched; sting rays gliding above our heads in a tunnel-shaped fish tank, their wings unfolded like umbrellas.

No, these soundless sea creatures are not wild. In the SEA LIFE Aquarium at LEGOLAND, they are far away from their natural environment. Yet they still look fascinating. And harmless… And accessible… If you are a non-swimmer like me, you know what I mean.

Interestingly enough, slowing down at LEGOLAND of all places to see the aquarium dwellers awakened my interest in photography once again. Lately I had felt somewhat uninspired when it looked like the authenticity was lost in favor of AI-generated images and films. It might have had to some extent, but the real beauty of the world is irreplaceable even in the man-made lego world.

So, if you visit LEGOLAND in Carlsbad – whether by your choice or your kid’s nagging – take a few minutes to pop in to the SEA LIFE Aquarium for a change of scenery if nothing else.

Is LEGOLAND California Worth Visiting?

Now it’s the time for the final verdict. Although LEGOLAND California is intended for kids aged 2 to 12, I feel it’s more suitable for smaller kiddos. Even a 10-year old may find it unadventurous.
