Vegan in Amsterdam

I traveled to Amsterdam on a tight budget. Although nowadays big European cities offer plenty of vegan restaurants and cafes to choose from, I had my doubts about finding affordable vegan places in Amsterdam.

First, even now eating vegan can take a heavy toll on your budget. Despite lower prices on produce used to make a vegan wrap or bowl, the concept of serving vegan food still seems exotic. Therefore, prices can skyrocket, making it difficult to find affordable vegan food in any city, including Amsterdam.

Second, since I hadn’t come across a lot of information about vegan food in Amsterdam prior to my trip, I feared that I might have needed to stick to just veggies and fruits. What else would you expect from the home country of Gouda cheese?

Yet all my concerns vanished at once. The abundance of vegan options in Amsterdam surpassed all my expectations. Whether it’s a dinner at a sit-down restaurant or a quick bite on the go, the city knows exactly how to keep its budget travelers happy. Without further ado, here are my favorite places to get affordable vegan food in Amsterdam.

6 PLACES THAT OFFER AFFORDABLE VEGAN FOOD IN AMSTERDAM

1. MaozFalafel

The MaozFalafel was my ticket to affordable vegan food in Amsterdam. Not a fast food eater, I was surprised by the variety of flavors, the ability to build your own meal, and, last but not least, the prices of vegan dishes on the menu.

Update: The vegan fast-food outlet has changed its name (from Maoz Vegan to MaozFalafel) since I last grabbed my vegan wrap near Amsterdam Centraal a few years ago. But it still offers delicious meals for prices that suit most budgets.

The MaozFalafel menu is simple. It includes mostly vegan pita pockets with falafels, eggplants, or mushrooms, and other vegetables. You can also get vegan fries and orange juice to go with your meal. The whole concept is very similar to In-N-Out Burger fast-food restaurants in California. It’s fast, affordable, and delicious.

2. Soup en Zo

With several locations in Amsterdam city center, Soup en Zo focuses mostly on affordable vegetarian and vegan options such as soups and fresh salads. The price depends on the size of your meal. You pay anywhere from five to eight euros for a cup of soup of your choice. If you ask me, their Harira, North-African split pea soup with mint, is one of the best vegan choices on a cold afternoon.

3. Stach

The locals and visitors of Amsterdam who’ve been to the city before may disagree with me on it. But I had my fair share of affordable vegan Buddha bowls and sushi from Stach when visiting Amsterdam.

Note: Not all Stach Food stores are the same. Some of them look more like deli and bakery cafés with just a few vegan options. Others have a whole range of premade vegan bowls, soups, salads, juices, cakes, and pastries. The food is always fresh and delivered daily.

4. Albert Heijn

If you have a kitchenette in your hotel room and like making your own meal, Albert Heijn helps you stock up on all culinary essentials. The largest and most popular supermarket chain in Amsterdam, it sells fresh fruits, vegetables, bread, and anything you need to prepare your own healthy vegan meal that doesn’t break the bank.

On top of that, the place offers premade vegan wraps and salads, smoothies, and juices. I frequented Albert Heijn to get my daily orange juice that I squeezed myself. A 500-ml bottle cost less than three euros. Can you beat this price?

5. The Happy Pig Pancake Shop

Having a serious sweet tooth, I couldn’t afford not to treat myself to some vegan goodies. The Happy Pig Pancake Shop came in handy. Never mind the fact that I had to circle around the city center quite a while to find it.

Not particularly affordable, the place serves some of the best vegan pancakes and crepes in Amsterdam. You can build your own pancake or go with everybody’s favorite, pancakes with banana, chocolate-hazelnut sauce, and toasted almond slices.

6. Ice Bakery

If pancakes are not your cup of tea, head over to Ice Bakery for delicious and quite affordable vegan dessert in Amsterdam. Vegan choices here are limited, just a few kinds of muffins and other baked goods. But it’s worth it, especially if it’s a cherry muffin or a gooey brownie.
