Road-tripping across the American Southwest

The Southwestern United States, better known as the American Southwest, is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise full of incredible road trip destinations and hidden gems galore. From deserts to canyons, waterfalls and unique sandstone arches, the region entices with natural wonders you can’t find anywhere else.

The American Southwest is a broad term. There are no strict boundaries of the region. Occasionally, geographic societies and other organizations try to give the order to this large territory known as the American Southwest.

Despite their efforts, the number of definitions of the region doesn’t get any shorter. Overall, the American Southwest encompasses California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. Some terms also include the southernmost parts of Oregon, Wyoming, and Idaho.

Regardless of the definition, there is no better place packed with the classic road trip destinations than the American Southwest. This unique area of the U.S. has gathered the deepest canyons, the vast deserts, and some of the most spectacular national parks and monuments.

THE 13 BEST ROAD TRIP DESTINATIONS TO  EXPLORE IN THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST

ARIZONA

1. Grand Canyon National Park

Symbol of the state of Arizona, Grand Canyon National Park is one of the most famous in the American Southwest. The great abyss with its layered red rocks is considered one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. If it’s not enough, in 1979 the Grand Canyon was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spanning 277 miles in length and up to 18 miles in width, the park offers plenty of outdoor adventures and jaw-dropping vistas. Since many visitors favor the South Rim with its popular Mather Point and Yavapai Point, the West Rim seems significantly quieter. Yet it doesn’t disappoint either. Here, the Grand Canyon Skywalk alone deserves all the rights to be called one of the best road trip destinations in the American Southwest.
